New Home

Here's our chicks new home, nice and spacious and comfy :-) they've mostly settled. They have to stay inside the coop at the moment, otherwise they could run off into the bush, but after a week or so we'll let them out into the garden.

And Bambino, is doing well, she's definately getting taller and has more feathers, but as you can see she's got a long way to catch up with the others.
She's discovered today that she's tall enough to pop her head out of the handle hole/window in her box.

This made us giggle, one of the boys managed to get this shot of her, in fact my boys took all these photos.
Have a great week.

Heaven in a Pot?

Well for Bambino it surely is :-) Yesterday Jess popped her into the food container with her supply of crumbles. YumYum , I was like "what's that noise?" Her happy chirping was so loud I could hear it from the kitchen.

But like all the good things too much of a good thing can be overwhelming, so after 30 seconds she wanted to get out.

She's getting more feathers now and looking a little taller.

A Taste of Freedom

Yesterday bambino got to play in the sun :-)

She's still cute, her weights going a bit up and down I guess it takes it out of you growing feathers.

Here's the rest of our flock.

See you tomorrow.

Chick in a Slipper

A quiet day here on the chicken front, I can tell you the chicks don't like rain though, and made quite a noise as the rain came down and they were being carried back to their brooder box.

Bambino's settling well into her new intensive care routine, and is starting to eat really well and consistantly. Her weight today is 105grams.

and for cute photo of the day how about a chick in a slipper?

Have a great evening.

Bambino's Scare

Bambino gave me such a fright yesterday morning, hubby had decided that the chicks could live out in their brooder on the deck, but with no lights to keep the heat up. All the chicks except Bambino have heaps of feathers now. But Bambino is still a small ball of fluff. She seemed fine for the first night, but after the second night outside, yesterday morning she was comatose, not moving not talking and barely breathing. So in a big turn around for me- remember the bird phobia, I picked her up popped her under the lights and prayed and cried and prayed some more- within 20 minutes she was standing and talking again, relief isn't the word, thank you angels.

Here she is not long after:

We then had a long cuddle, I think she might be curing my chicken phobia :-)
But she had lost weight, she'd dropped down to 94g :-( Here she is today she's back up to 100g now.

And the other chicks? Here's a photo of the 2 chicks (no names yet) who've been raised by snowy, you can see how big they're getting. They are enjoying exploring the garden with their mom.

Have a great weekend.

So far you've only met a few of the chicks, Snowy one of our broody hens has been doing a great job of raising 2 chicks, one rhode island red and one sussex buff. These 2 chicks have the most feathers out of all of them.

and a close up of the rhodey chick that's bambino's sibling

When I got back home from work tonight Jerry has moved the inside chicks to outside on to the veranda, they're just getting to big to be in our living room, and their coop doesn't arrive until next week. They seem quite happy and it means for the first time they will actually experience a proper night time without any lamps, and that means they'll have to huddle.

And Bambino??
Bambino weighed in yesterday at 110grams, she's a tired chick today, as they've been in their run in the garden part of the day.
Here she is, look at those cute baby feathers.

have a great evening

A Chicken in the house?

Perhaps that should read "Another Chicken in the house?"We were just sitting down to our dinner, when Jess said "Ginger's coming DOWN the stairs." Sure enough she had obviously sneeked in through the open front door, and made her way upstairs, she's been working her way round the house- checking it all out!
Here she is on the stairs.

Now onto bambino- no photo of her today :-( but she has put on 6 grams in 2 days, plus she's growing some more "proper" feathers.

Enjoy your evening

Lego Chicks

While I was at work yesterday the boys took the chicks out of their box and they had a play, bet you never knew chicks like Lego too?
but it would seem they might :-)

They are starting to get quite big and are practicing flying- which I have to say is a bit freaky in the house, especially as the flapping aspect of birds is one that tends to make me scream.....

Here they are having a snuggle sleep.

And Finally to Bambino, well last night Jerry started to agree with me maybe Bambino isn't growing..... or is but very slow, she packs away the food but still seems very small compared to the others. So she had her first weigh in last night, she came in at 103g. We'll weigh her again today to see if she's grown :-) I think she's looking a bit bigger this morning, so fingers crossed.

Have a great day.

Here's the latest on our chicks, so most of the chicks are getting big and are looking funny with their new feathers, but one chick is about a third of the size. I've called her (least I'm hoping she's a hen) Bambino, she's the cutest thing.

We weren't going to give any of them names until we knew for sure which ones are hens (keepers) and which ones are Roosters (for the pot). But she's too cute not to give "her" a name.

Here's Bambino in Jess's hand.

Have a great weekend

our first adventures in Chicken keeping

Above is a photo of Huffy and Sootie by the borlotti beans.

I thought it was about time I started a blog to share our journey with our chickens, pizza oven creation and other green adventures.

Some of you will know that I actually have a bird phobia, so it took my hubby and kids about 6 years to convince me that we really did need chickens.... We got our first 2 chickens about 5 months ago, we now have 6 hens and 10 chicks.
I'm still working on my phobia, but I'm pleased to report It's getting better all the time.

I never believed it when people said chickens have personalties and are fun- I mean Come On!! it's a chicken, but I've been delighted as these birds have opened my heart to them.
