Wishing you all a Very Happy Christmas.

They're getting Big

These are our latest chicks now at about 8 weeks old. Still not sure how many are hens or roosters? They are pretty cute though! They're good at looking after themselves, and don't need their mom Snowy anymore.

Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.

Chicks!

These are our first chicks, that have been born from our own cockeral Doofy and our hens. Pretty proud moment :-)
We gave some of our fertilised eggs to a friend and he's had 4 hatch, so our chicken progeny spread through Upper Hutt- Love it!

chicks really are a taste of Spring!

Lamby

I have been so neglectful- we've had a special guest staying with us for 4 weeks now, while her owners are away. We are looking after Dandelion the lamb. She was rejected by her mum, probably because she was the first one born of twins.

It has been such a pleasure having her on our property. She still needs 2 bottles a day but she'd definately getting bigger. Here are some photos of her first week with us. Including a walk to the park.

chicken latest

The chickens have been enjoying the sunshine, following all that rain! Doofy is getting pretty big, he's still not quite got a handle on the cock a doodle doo yet:-)
He is however, doing a good job with the hens, keeping them safe and rounding them up into the coop at night.

It's Raining and Raining .... and Raining

We've had a lot of rain today, on already wet ground. The poor chickens were very keen to be out and about out of their run. So I let them out a little earlier than usual, but I didn't think they'd stay out too long in the rain. I was wrong!

So, they were looking pretty bedraggled by this afternoon, here's Sage, one of the Rhode Island Reds.

Here's Huffy, she gets a real "punk" look going on when she gets wet, but she wouldn't pose for a photo today.

Honey, though was the funniest, she just hung around on our porch, occasionally pecking on the front door- I think she was hoping to get let in to the "Big Coop" lol.

But the wet weather doesn't seem to have put them off laying, here are todays eggs, aren't they lovely colours and shapes.

Chicken update

Well it's been a while, the chickens have looked a bit scraggy as most of them have been doing a full moult- and trust me that ain't pretty, seemed too mean to take their photos then.

Some of them are still "growing" their new feathers but most have shiney new ones. I especially love Huffy's new feathers I keep telling her she looks "Mighty Spruce"  she also has new "shoes" I love her feathered feet :-)

                                                                            Huffy

Here are some of the girls lining up to have their photo taken on the ramp.

Finally Doofy, Doofy is still practicing his crowing.... he's got  a way to go yet with that. He's getting real tall though.

Here's Doofy with some of "his" hens.

I love this picture of him running through the bush, he has a slight Moa look about him.

Have a great week.

Dooffy

We have decided to keep one rooster- Dooffy, he's a Rhode Island Red. He has a lovely gentle nature, he's not quite mature yet, so I guess that could still change. He's going to be one big chicken!

Here are the 2 Dorking hens, they are great friends, and are very social. So if they see you they run up and have a chat. They don't have names yet- so ideas please!!
They have the softest feathers, and despite being friendly are pretty hard to catch for a hug :-)

And finally Hetty, she's a  funny chicken :-) she hurt her leg last year, so she walks with  a bit of a limp, so doesn't get around quite as well as the others. But she's happy and loves to sit in certain spots and watch the world go by.

That's all from the chickadees this week.

Can we go out now?

Everyday, the chickens wait patiently to be let out of their run into the garden. We like them to have have laid their eggs and to have had a good serving of their Peck N Lay food. Here are Huffy and Ginger discussing and wondering how much longer they may have to wait.

We are still missing Bambino, amazing how much you can love and miss a special chick.

Rest in peace Bambino

Very sad day today as Bambino has died. She was such a joy and a special chicken. She helped heal my bird phobia she had such a feisty personality and we will miss her a lot.
We found out from a friend that she probably had a rare genetic disorder which meant she'd never have grown up.

She's with the angels now.

We love you Bambino x
